Kythera. More commonly known as "Hora", this is the island’s capital city, located to the south of the island. Kapsali is the old harbor of the City of Kythera, which boasts one of the most picturesque landscapes in Greece. It became the island’s capital during the Venetian occupation. For safety reasons, the Venetians transferred the capital here from the area of Agios Dimitrios, (today’s Paleohora), a 13th century Byzantine settlement. Hora’s castle was constructed in 1503 atop an already existing fortified establishment, with the settlement built around the Castle’s entrance. The architecture is mainly characteristic of the Aegean Sea while many buildings, especially the mansions, have adopted elements of the Venetian and the British period. The belfries of the capital city’s churches have a dominant position, which can be seen clearly from a high vantage point.
The city of Kythera has two main squares. The first is the Central square, where the City Hall, the Banks and the public services are located, and which is the busiest part of the Capital. The second is the “Estavromenos” square, named after the Estavromenos parish, the cathedral - metropolitan church of Kythera. It was on this square that the Frenchmen declared the principles of the French Revolution in 1799 and established democracy, abolishing the feudal offices of the Venetian system and burning the book of Nobles, the famous Libro D’Oro.
The best view can be seen from Belvedere, situated at the East end of the city on the road to Kapsali. In Italian, "Belvedere" means wonderful view, and indeed, you will not be disappointed It is a very romantic place and has always been a meeting point for people in love. Opposite the Belvedere is the settlement “Mesa Vourgo” which was built on the edge of the Castle, back when the city started to expand. You will see many churches, which have been in the private possession of certain families for hundreds of years.
A stroll through Hora’s sprawling alleys and neighborhoods will charm you. The houses are built closely together, making even bicycle passage impossible. Take a leisurely walk down Hora’s main street with its small, charming shops, purchase nice traditional products and relax with your friends in the welcoming coffee shops and bars.
The Kythera Historic Archive is kept in Hora’s Castle, in the Palace’s building. Visit it and ask for the importance of the documents saved in it from the early 16th century.
