Situated at the island’s geographic center, this villages characteristic feature is the centrally placed church of Agios Georgios with its light-blue dome (a color commonly used for the painting of church domes on Kythera). The village has several shops including a bakery and a supermarket. Together with the villages of Stathianika, Pitsinianika, Keramoto, Agios Ilias and Alexandrades, Karvounades constitutes a geographical district of the Municipality of Kythera. It is one of the oldest villages in Kythera whose inhabitants were occupied with agricultural activities.
