A picturesque seaside village at the East of Kythera, Avlemonas is built in the style of the Cycladic island. It is one of the island’s most beautiful villages, due to its small bays with crystal -clear, deep green waters. The walking paths around the village with their multicolored flower beds were created at the effort of the inhabitants, and are the best attraction for couples in love.
The village of Avlemonas is a good suggestion for entertainment, especially suited for families with little children. A walk around the village of Avlemonas offers a relaxing swimming in the beautiful sheltered bay, a meal at one the beautiful small taverns or coffee by the sea. During the summer, many concerts are organized here. You can also go fishing from the rocks, or rent a boat for a small boating-rental on the Eastern shores.
It is not accidental, therefore, that Avlemonas attracts singers and other musical artists. Panos Fillis, the modern poet of Kythera, used to sing at the village’s stone bench.
The Small Castello is Avlemona’s historic monument, a small fortress which was used for surveillance of the area and of the harbor. Another important building is the historical house with the old sun dial, located on the left of the back beach.
Today in Avlemonas, many room rentals offer all the comforts for a carefree, even luxurious vacation. Many summer visitors have become so enamoured with Avlemonas' quiet charm that they return faithfully every year, ignoring the rest of the island. Avlemonas' rather far-off location makes the village its own independent destination with its own ardent fan club. Along with the current plans to triple the village in size, it has in the last years increasingly begun to resemble a small city in its nature. Avlemonas borders with Palaeopoli, the island's longest beach.
