Kythera at a Glance

According to the myth of Hesiodus, the goddess Aphrodite was born in Kythera. The island of Kythera is located between Crete and Peloponnese, at the junction of the Ionian, the Aegean and the Libyan Sea in the south-east of Greece. It can truly be considered a cross-way of civilizations, since people of both cultures have touched its shores and left their signatures on its beautiful landscape. Kythera is a mountainous island of 284 square kilometers that harbors lush valleys, innumerable beaches and characteristic villages sprawling along its hillsides. The pure natural abundance of Kytherals environment is its key charm, inviting the visitor to stay, perhaps for ever.Kythera has a Mediterranean climate, with mild temperatures but also moisture and strong winds. The island has a rich flora and marks the main passage of many migratory birds. Frequent winter rainfalls supply the island with large quantities of water, which flow from the many natural springs almost all year around.

Today, Kythera has a population of 4.500 inhabitants, which are settled in 64 small villages across the island. Most of these villages are located inland and connected by a good road network. Kythera constitutes a unique administrative municipality and belongs to the Piraeus Prefecture. The inhabitants are mainly engaged in the agricultural and touristic sector. Due to the island’s virgin nature, organic products are widely produced, while olive oil and honey in particular remain local specialties.

The island offers the visitor the opportunity to admire classical antiquities: three hundred Byzantine churches, British-era bridges and schools, the museums and the Historic Archive of Kythera transport the visitor back to other eras and invite him to rediscover the hidden treasures. In its numerous, hidden caves, the rock walls eavesdrop the secrets of people.

Kythera is an idyllic place, reigned over by Nature’s magic. Visitors fall in love with the island and easily make the decision to stay here for a lifetime. Let your dreams guide you and discover a different life.
