Fishing in Kythera

You are surrounded by the Kithirian Sea, the Mediterranean Sea’s richest waters. Do you want climb the rocks, sit down with your fishing rod and fish? You can also take a boat and look for a leeward bay for fishing. Get the necessary information from the Harbour Master’s Office and off you go. There are all sorts of fish here which make a tasty lunch. Fishing is usually carried out by nets, fishing rods/lines and scuba diving.

If you want to go fishing head for the following leeward bays:
  • Limnionas: not protected from NW winds
  • Melidoni: not protected from N, NW winds
  • Vroulea: not protected from N, NE winds
  • Routsounas: not protected from W, NW winds
  • Agios Nikolaos: not protected from NW winds
  • Agios Lefteris: not protected from W, SW winds

For fishing, the areas around rocky islands and rocks are most suitable, such as Hitra, Kofinidia, Kornari, Dragonares, Fidonissi, Makronissi, Mesa Nissi and Exo Nissi of Limnionas, Hiri of Feloti etc.

Warning! Scuba diving is prohibited in the area from Dragonares through Kapsali. For more information ask the local Harbour Authorities.

There is no particular maritime tradition on the island. However, today there are 30 fishermen who sell their fresh catches. The island’s fish taverns always offer fresh fish prepared according to the most tasty traditional recipes.
