Canyoning in Paleochora

Paleochora’s canyon (or Kakia Lagada canyon) is an almost surreally beautiful canyon. Starting from the area of Paleochora, the Medieval castle town of Agios Dimitrios, it stretches until the Northern shores of Kythera and to the east of Agia Pelagia in the area of Limni. At the canyon’s extrusion is a small lake after which the area was named. The canyon has a difficult access and you need to have the proper equipment. You must use ropes and climbing gear at two points. The canyon is inaccessible during the winter because at many points the waters forms deep lakes.

You have two options in order to walk down Paleochora’s canyon.

The first is to start from the village of Trifillianika. Follow the path which leads you to Paleochora. Arriving here, continue into the canyon through the bed, without going up the hill.

For the second route, go to Paleochora via the road which leads you to the parking area. Below, behind the church of Agia Varvara, is a downhill path which will lead you inside the canyon’s bed. The atmosphere inside the canyon is truly impressive and has a wild feel to it.

Directions

The route will take approximately two hours from Paleochora through the back of the canyon, through the lake. The bed is very rough, with large rocks and walking is quite difficult. It needs a lot of attention in order not to get hurt…. At the difficult spots that are only climbable by rope, special rings have been affixed to attach the rope to.
