The traditional hotel Porfyrousa is housed in a building that was built
during Venetian rule in Kythera, and was the lordly mansion. It is
situated in the medieval village of Mylopotamos in the central square
of Platanos. The village in the up-country of the island and just 2,5
km from the closest beach, is one of the most beautiful in the island
with the longest history and number of traditional buildings. The
building is built like the good old days with no plastics and enamels.
The hotel was renovated in 2007. It is very cool during the
summer and very warm during the winter since its walls in many parts
surpass one meter width. The furniture is made out of wood, from local
cabinet makers and are replicas of old traditional furniture.
Everywhere in the surfaces is revealed the stone and the wood. The
fireplace offers snugness during the winter.
Each room is equipped with a desk, so one can work on an
essay, read and write. Especially during the winter, the hostel is the
best choice for “sophisticated” poets. In here you will live a totally
different life, belonging to another forgotten period. A trip into
time...
Elena, the owner of the hotel is an agriculturalist and is involved the
last few years in the production of organic products. From her
productions you can buy olive oil, wine, raki and traditional Kytherian
oil rusks. Ask her to guide you to her farm in Paleopoli and let her
explain you everything about agricultural production and her products!
